How to Build a Shotgun Fruiting Chamber (SGFC): Step-by-Step
About 1 hour active work, plus colonization time
A shotgun fruiting chamber, or SGFC, is a clear plastic tote drilled with hundreds of 1/4 inch holes and floored with damp perlite. The perlite holds water, the holes provide passive fresh air exchange, and the clear walls let light reach the fruits. It is the cheapest, fastest-to-build fruiting setup in home cultivation, and it is the right answer for small-batch grows: PF tek cakes, uncased grain cakes, small fruiting bags, or a single 1.2 L spawn jar dumped into a small container. It was popularized on the Shroomery forum in the early 2000s and still works.
By the end of this tutorial you will have a working 56 quart SGFC sitting on a shelf, holding 95% humidity passively between mistings, ready to accept colonized cakes or small bags. Build time is about 45 minutes if you have the drill ready. The SGFC is purpose-built for small batches; if you are running quart-jar or larger grain spawn into bulk substrate, the monotub tutorial is the better fit. Use the SGFC when you have a few small cakes or a single small bag to fruit and you do not want to commit to a tub.
What you'll need
Materials
- Clear plastic storage tote with lid, 50 to 66 quarts (Sterilite ClearView Latch 1971 or Iris Weathertight equivalents both work)
- Coarse perlite (horticultural grade, not packing peanuts), 8 to 10 quarts dry
- 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol, plus a spray bottle
- Filtered, distilled, or pre-boiled tap water for misting and the perlite soak
- Aluminum foil (optional, for covering colonized cake bases)
- Painter's tape or duct tape (for sealing any miss-drilled or extra holes)
Equipment
- Cordless drill
- 1/4 inch drill bit (twist or brad-point both work; sharper is better with thin plastic)
- Permanent marker, for marking hole positions
- Ruler or tape measure
- Eye protection
- Bucket or sink for soaking the perlite
- Fine mesh strainer or colander (for draining the perlite)
- Spray bottle for misting
- Cheap digital hygrometer (optional but worth the $8)
- Wire shelf, oven rack, or upturned plastic deli cups (raises cakes above the perlite bed)
