How to Build a Still Air Box for Mushroom Cultivation

About 1 hour active work, plus colonization time

A still air box (SAB) is a clear plastic tote with two arm holes that gives you a sealed, dust-settled workspace for any open-lid lab task: pouring agar, cutting a tissue clone, transferring a wedge between plates, or drawing liquid culture into a syringe. Build cost runs about $15 to $25 and total assembly time is under 20 minutes. It is the single highest-impact tool in a home mushroom lab for the price.

By the end of this tutorial you will have a finished SAB sitting on your work surface, sanitized and ready for its first agar pour. You will also know how to set it up before each session, how often to replace the tote, and the three mistakes that turn a working SAB into a useless plastic box.

What you'll need

Materials

  • Clear plastic storage tote with snap-on lid, 50 to 66 quart capacity (Sterilite 1949 64-qt or Iris 60-qt both work; under $20 at Walmart, Target, or any hardware store)
  • 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol, 16 oz minimum
  • Spray bottle (8 to 16 oz), one
  • Lint-free cloth or paper towels
  • Painter's tape or electrical tape, one roll (for sealing rough edges)
  • Optional: foam pipe insulation, 1/2-inch ID, two 6-inch lengths (cushions the arm holes)

Equipment

  • Drill with a 1/4-inch bit (to start the cuts)
  • Sharp utility knife or box cutter with fresh blade
  • Jigsaw OR a heated wire / soldering iron (jigsaw is faster, heated wire gives smoother edges)
  • Marker (Sharpie or grease pencil)
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Sandpaper, 120 to 220 grit (smooths the cut edges)
  • Safety glasses and a dust mask

Step 1: Pick the right tote and plan the arm-hole layout
